What VFD is recommended for a 4-way shuttle ASRS system? +
The Control Techniques M700 series is the most widely specified VFD for 4-way shuttle AS/RS systems. Key reasons: superior position control with the Digitax SF option, STO (Safe Torque Off) safety function for shuttle emergency stop, fast dynamic response for shuttle travel acceleration/deceleration, and cold-ambient rating down to -10°C (with panel heater options for cold chain). ABB ACS880 is preferred for heavy hoist and lift axes due to its Direct Torque Control algorithm delivering precise torque at zero speed.
What is the difference between Control Techniques M700 and M600? +
The CT M700 is a premium high-performance drive with advanced position control, functional safety up to PL-e (STO/SBC/SS1/SS2/SLS), onboard PLC, and Ethernet/IP + Profinet + EtherCAT connectivity. The M600 is a mid-range drive with good dynamic performance and STO safety at a lower price. For shuttle AS/RS where precise position feedback and full safety integration are needed, M700 is recommended. For simpler conveyor and pump applications, M600 provides good cost-performance balance.
Can VFDs be installed in -25°C cold storage environments? +
Standard VFDs are rated for 0°C to +40°C ambient. For cold chain installations at -18°C to -25°C, VFD panels require: (1) thermostatically controlled anti-condensation heaters inside the IP55/IP65 enclosure to maintain drive temperature above 0°C; (2) cold-rated cables and wiring; (3) drive firmware configured for cold-start conditions. The VFD itself operates within its rated ambient because the panel heater keeps the enclosure warm. This configuration is standard practice in cold chain AS/RS worldwide.
